EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
After Hours Studio
Overview
The After Hours Studio (AHS) enrichment program at UAMA provides students with additional academic and arts/enrichment opportunities after school (AHstudios). It also provides a space for special teacher, student and UAMA partner-led programs that do not fall within the regular academic school day.
Current AHstudios: Fall 2007
Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls with Sara Landau, LaFrae Sci, and guest teachers
This intensive 10-week program consists of instrument instruction (drums, bass, guitar, keyboards, vocals, performance), band practice, and workshops on a variety of topics, from sound engineering and songwriting to the history of music and self promotion. Games and crafting are interspersed throughout the weeks. Classes and workshops are taught by professional women musicians who also serve as informal mentors. Students form bands in the second week, and during band practice they write music and lyrics collectively, assisted by band coaches and teachers. At the end of the 10 weeks, the bands perform their original songs at a large-scale recital concert.
Anime and Art Club
In this student-run AHstudio, students learn about anime and drawing, and what it takes to create great pieces of work. In addition to focusing on art, students may engage in role playing sessions, language lessons and other side activities relating to anime. Films and field trips may also be a part of the course.
Athletics
UAMA’s weight room, with brand-new fitness machines and free weights, is available to select students after-school to practice structured fitness routines, supervised by a UAMA fitness coach.
Track and Field is UAMA's first PSAL approved athletic team, open to any student meeting eligibility requirements who enjoys learning to run, jump, throw, or simply enjoys the spirit of competition. Track team meets three days a week after school and competes with teams from other New York City high schools.
In 2008, UAMA will be participating for a second time in the Burton Chill snowboarding program, which offers free after-school snowboarding instruction for select students who otherwise would not have the opportunity to snowboard. 5 UAMA students will travel to Mountain Creek once a week for six weeks in January-February, to learn what it takes to be a snowboarder.
Tutoring
UAMA teachers are available after-school and at lunch to give students extra help with homework, essays, and job applications. This may or may not involve structured activities, but provides a quiet place for students to complete work and receive individual attention. Students can attend on a drop-in basis, or may be required to attend in order to make up work.
