STUDIO 9: PROJECT-BASED ELECTIVES

Ninth grade students at UAMA are introduced to the arts through a series of project-based elective courses as well as arts integration projects. Each elective course is taught by a full-time UAMA teacher, and designed in collaboration with our resident Arts Integration Specialist, and, in some cases, partner organizations. The Arts Integration Specialist also works closely with academic teachers to integrate the arts into core academic classes, through a series of units organized around the visual, musical, and literary arts. Each Studio 9 elective and arts integration unit will introduce students to the language and history of a given art form; provide a context for direct experience with the art form, either as viewer or practitioner; and ask students to engage in reflection, assessment, and analysis through writing, testing, and projects.

Studio 9’s goals are as follows:

  • Students gain practical information about approaching the world of art.
  • Students gain tools and context to integrate arts learning with academic learning.
  • Students learn about how the arts exist at UAMA, helping them make educated decisions about engaging with those art forms as they move through their high school career.
