Xstudio 9 Elective Course Offerings: Spring 2008

Family Cook

Barrett Heaton and Vanessa Snowden, with Lynn Fredericks, Family Cook Productions

Students learn to cook, learn about nutrition and health, and learn how to grow their own food, through hands on activities. They will prepare food, perform scientific experiments, and plan a community garden program, all with the goal of increasing access to and education about healthy food choices for the UAMA community.

Introduction to Art

Students paint, draw, and sculpt, using all types of materials to create work representing their own ideas. The class will work on developing drawing skills, painting, making sculptures out of clay, and making papier-mache.

Oh, la la! Students rendez-vous in Ms. Snowden's class for an introduction to French language and culture. They learn more about this country's delicious food, great films, and, of course, how to speak the beautiful language. A bientot...

The Way Things Work

Jason Henkle

students will explore simple machines like levers, pulleys, and wheels. They will use these to create their own machines to complete a challenge or compete against their classmates. For example, they will get to design and race their own rubber band powered racecars, and build the strongest structure out of paper that they can. Later in the course, they may learn about repairing bicycles.

The Band with Jazz at Lincoln Center

Michael Cain, Bennett Miller, and Brian Landrus

Students use instruments and computers to play, write, improvise, compose, record, mix, master and disseminate innovative music. UAMA’s music studio, equipped with keyboards, full drum set, bass and other instruments, serves as the home base as students prepare for performances across the city with jazz pianist Michael Cain and guitarist Bennett Miller.

DJ'ing: So You Want to be a DJ?

In UAMA’s own ten-station DJ studio, students will learn basic DJ'ing techniques (blending, mixing, scratching, cutting), learn the history of hip hop, receive a DJ name, and work with the Band to build a strong foundation for developing their musical voice as DJs.

Digital Design and Illustration

Students develop basic design principles and concepts, through the study and creation of symbols, images, illustration and typography. Students learn how to present ideas and information in ad campaigns, packaging, magazines, and other means that will reach target audiences. They create original illustrated characters and logos for greeting cards, products, and comics.

Digital Photography

Lenard Smith

What does it take to create a meaningful photograph? This course will focus on both the technical and creative aspects of Digital Photography. Students will learn the basics of using digital cameras, and study historical and contemporary artwork to explore aesthetics of photography to build a foundation of techniques. Class activities will include creative writing exercises, peer critiques, field trips, working in the ‘field’ to complete assignments, and guest speakers.

Hip Hop Dance

Adesola Osakalumi, Antoine ‘Doc’ Judkins

Students work with renowned choreographers in developing their own dance performance and signature dance moves, while learning about different aspects of hip hop culture as a form of expression. They will connect to professional opportunities by visiting different hip hop and dance agencies.

Music Business with Abstract Academy

Chris and Mike Peterson, Abstract Academy

Students learn how to promote a concert or event, create a business plan, and produce live shows, while simultaneously exploring the music industry.

Music Production

Amatus-Sami Karim

Using programs such as Garageband, Logic and Reason, students learn how to mix beats on G4 laptops. They capture music from keyboards and integrate it into computer-generated compositions, put lyrics to beats through songwriting workshops, and learn to record music with professional sound engineers and through visits to recording studios.

Video Production

Dan Winckler

Students will learn to use the video camera as a tool to tell their stories and amplify their voice. They will shoot, share, and sell audio and video online and learn how to make the audience hungry for more! They will master the computer, the camera, and the Internet as they build a portfolio for college admission.
