Summer Studio: Meet & Greet @ Sony Music Studios with Lyfe Jennings

August 10, 2006 2-5pm @Sony Music Studio

UAMA Freshmen and Sophomores meet for the first time and travel to the music studios of Sony BMG. Students meet platinum artist, Lyfe Jennings, and have lunch with staff members of both Sony BMG and the Grammy Foundation. A tour of the studios follows.

Poetry Intensive Workshop with Watts Prophets

September 7, 8, 9, 10 2006 3:30-7pm @UAMA

A group of UAMA poetry students works with the Watts Prophets for a series of workshops in preparation of a two-night performance open to the public. The Watts Prophets are a performance troupe from Los Angeles renown for their combination of performance poetry with percussive rhythms and improvisational jazz credited as the forerunner of hip-hop music.

Students involved in the Poetry Intensive Workshop perform at Spiegeltent to open for a an evening of performances by The Last Poets, Universes and Watts Prophets. The Watts Prophets are a performance troupe from Los Angeles renown for their combination of performance poetry with percussive rhythms and improvisational jazz credited as the forerunner of hip-hop music.

Principal for a Day: Sydney Meeks

October 19, 2006 9am-1pm @ UAMA

President, CEO of Tribeca Film Institute, Sydney Meeks joins UAMA Principal, Paul Thompson for the day. She takes on the role of Principal for the Day, a program organized by Pencil "Public Education Needs Civil Involvement In Learning." Ms. Meeks meets students throughout the day to learn about the UAMA student experience, as a video crew from Pencil films the experience. This initiates a partnership with Tribeca Film Institute that exposes UAMA students to the art of filmmaking. www.pencil.org & www.tribecafilminstitute.org

Video Game Testing: Karma Tycoon

Students of the Computer Art and Animation XStudio are joined by special guests from Do Something and MMedia. They test a video game designed to introduce teens to the concept of social responsibility. Multi-Platinum Artist Bow Wow Visits UAMA!

Students of the Emceeing and Songwriting and Music Production XStudios were welcomed by a very special surprise guest, Multi-Platinum Recording Artist, Bow Wow. Bow Wow candidly introduces the students to his experiences in the music industry while answering their questions about his career path and the challenges of fame. Special thanks to Sony Urban, the Grammy Foundation and the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences.

Parsons School of Design: Playtech Video Game Workshop

October 28, 12-4pm 2006 @ Parsons School of Design/ New School University

Students of the Computer Art and Animation XStudio visit Parsons School of Design for a special video game testing workshop with students of Parson's Design and Techonology department. Students learn about the process of creating video games, while examining the opportunity of pursuing a college degree in this field. www.parsons.newschool.edu

Sound Check with Multi-Platinum Artist Phil Collins!

November 3rd, 1-3pm 2006 @ Richard Rogers Theater

Organized by the NYC chapter of the Grammy Foundation and the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, a select group of UAMA students meet six-Grammy Award-winning Artist, Phil Collins. The Sound Check takes place at Richard Rogers Theater on Broadway. Students visit the set of Disney's new Broadway production, Tarzan. They learn about Collins' career path and inspiration, while getting a behind-the-scenes glimpse at a live Sound Check. http://disney.go.com/theatre/tarzan

Tarzan, Disney Broadway Musical

December 3th, 6:30-8:30 2006 @ Richard Rogers Theater

Former Theater XStudio students attend Disney's new Broadway Musical, Tarzan. In November, these students met Grammy Award-Winning Musician and Composor, Phil Collins in a special Sound Check event. They now attend the performance with a friend or family member courtesy of Disney Theatrical Productions. BAM's Red Hot and Riot Festival

Band XStudio students attend the Red Hot + Riot Festival at Brooklyn Academy of Music. This performance features the tunes of the great Nigerian musician and human rights activist Fela Kuti. The event benefits World AIDS Day.

Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation: Youth Holiday Party

Students of the Hip Hop Dance students are invited to represent UAMA at a gala evening of celebrities and celebrations for the youth involved in Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundations' programming. Rush generously offered UAMA and the Hip Hop Theater Festival funding to offer a Hip Hop Theater XStudio in Spring 2007.

Tribeca Film Institute Youth Holiday Party

Power 105 Radio Station & Eastside Sound Studio

Students of the Sound Engineering and Recording Xstudio visit a radio station and recording studio for a firsthand experience behind the scenes. Students in this studio had learned how to use ProTools to record their own radio show, and also learned how to set up a recording session for their peers in the Emceeing and Song-Writing Xstudio.

Grammy Foundation: DJ-Remixing Pro-Session: In-School DJ Concert

January 29, 2007 9:00am-10:00am

In an all-school assembly, students are introduced to the history and art of turntablism. Two guest DJs spin and scratch showcasing their skills and exciting the crowd, welcoming them back from mid-winter break. Grammy Foundation: DJ-Remixing Pro-Session: DJ Workshops

Selected students join two professional DJs for a workshop immersing them in the technology and art of turntablism. Using the software, Serrato, students learn how to mix their mp3s using the software’s special equipment. Ecko Unlimited: Jacket Design Finalists’ Presentation

February 22, 2007 3:00-5:00pm

UAMA student and jacket design competition finalist Kala Pendarvis presents her design along with the ten other design finalists. This project is the culmination of a semester of work in the ‘Jacket Design with Ecko Unlimited’ Xstudio. Students experienced the entire design process from market research to sketching to tech specifications. Kala presents her final renderings but also has a peer model her prototype back from the manufacturing facilities. Grammy Foundation: DJ-Remixing Pro-Session: Studio Visit to Legacy Recording Studio

Students participating in the in-school DJ workshop extend their experience from UAMA’s studio into a recording studio. Students visit the largest recording studio on the east coast. They meet producers and engineers that introduce them to projects that included remixes for Beyonce. They learn about the art of the remix, followed by a DJ/dance party celebration. Cooper Hewitt Design Museum: Fashion Design Workshop with Alabama Chanin

Students interested in fashion design visit the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum for a workshop with fashion designer Alabama Chanin. Rob Lewis, Music Director of Christina Aguilera’s World Tour Visits UAMA!

Rob Lewis visits the Music Business Xstudios and Band Xstudios for a special jam and presentation. He discusses his experience in the music industry starting in Berklee College of Music and growing into the successful music director that he became. Tribeca Film Institute: In-School Screening: Hip Hop Project

Cooper Hewitt Design Museum: Design Your Hood

UAMA students interested in Architecture and Urban Planning attend a unique after school program in Fulton Mall. They explore the neighborhood with historians, filmmakers, urban planners and architects as they delve into the culture that makes it the special landmark that it is. Illstyle Peace Productions: Hip Hop Dance In-School Concert

Illstyle Peace Productions: Hip Hop Dance In-School Workshop & Luncheon

UAMA’s very own hip hop dance students are featured at the ‘Hip Hop Dance Generation Festival’ in June hosted by UAMA partner, Dancing in the Streets. In order to prepare for the festival, they perform for Illstyle’s dancers to get feedback on their moves. They then have two months to polish their performance before they perform before a crowd of over 300 people opening for Illstyle. Students join the dancers of Illstyle for lunch after the workshop to discuss the professional world of dance. www.dancinginthestreets.org

John Lennon Song-Writing Bus: Recording & Music Video Session

May 17, 8:30am-5:00pm

UAMA 10th Grader Keith Marcelle and 9th Grader Lance White are selected for a special collaborative recording session with students of Beacon High School. The students write lyrics, compose music, record a song and create a music video all in one day! They use the facilities of the John Lennon Song-Writing Bus and the skills of the on-site engineers and producers. Off-Broadway: In the Heights

Latina Magazine: Interviews and Photo Shoot

Design for Publication Xstudio students and select 10th graders are featured in a special ‘Life of a Latina Teen’ in Latina Magazine. Students meet the Lifestyle Editor of the magazine, while learning about the various careers the magazine industry offers. They are then interviewed and partake in a photo shoot.
