OVERVIEW
“When the arts become central to the learning environment, schools and other settings become places of discovery…The students are motivated to learn not just for test results or other performance outcomes, but for the learning experience itself."
Edward B. Fiske, "Champions of Change: The Impact of the Arts on Learning"
UAMA integrates the arts into core academic subjects through thematic units co-planned by UAMA academic teachers, UAMA artists-in-residence/art teachers, and partner organizations. In-class learning through the arts is most often supplemented by special field trips, events, and performances or exhibitions. Academic teachers also incorporate project-based components into most classroom assignments. Through such projects, New York State learning standards are achieved through hands-on and engaging acts of discovery. While gaining academic skills and cultural understanding through such artistic exploration, students simultaneously learn how to use various art materials and technologies, and gain comfort with the creative process.
